Welcome back to Disney Discovered! Recently The Little Mermaid live action movie came out! Today I am counting down my top 5 Little Mermaid songs.
5: Poor Unfortunate Souls
Poor Unfortunate Souls is sung by Melissa McCarthy. She plays Ursula. She uses magic to turn Ariel into a human. It is a classic. She’s making a deal with Ariel, trading her voice for legs. (Did you know in the live action movie, she makes Ariel forget that she needs to kiss Prince Eric?)
4. Under The Sea
Under The Sea is sung by Daveed Diggs. He plays Sebastian. He tries to tell Ariel, ”Don’t go to the surface”. Everyone enjoys the song. It’s a happy tune to hum to and also to sing! When I did theater class, we did The Little Mermaid musical. I was Sebastian!
3: Part Of Your World
Part Of Your World is sung by Halle Bailey, she plays Ariel. There are a lot of objects that she collected. Like Poor Unfortunate Souls it is a classic. Ariel sings it because she really wants to go up above the water.
2: Wild Uncharted Waters
Wild Uncharted Waters is sung by John-Hauer King. He plays Prince Eric. It’s a new song made by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Rob Marshall.
Honorable Mentions
Before we do my top pick, here are some honorable mentions.
- For The First Time. It’s sung by Halle. It’s about her thoughts put into a song.
- Kiss The Girl. It’s sung by Daveed, Awkwafina who plays Scuttle, and Jacob Tremblay who plays Flounder. They try to get Ariel and Eric to kiss.
- Fathoms Below. It is sung by Eric and crew. They sing on Eric’s birthday but a storm interrupts it.
1: Scuttlebutt
Scuttlebutt is sung by Awkwafina and Daveed. It is another song written by Lin-Manuel Miranda! Did you know that Awkwafina is the voice of Sisu in Raya and the Last Dragon, and Daveed and Lin-Manuel are in Hamilton together? You can see both on Disney+!
Scuttle tells the “gossip, the buzz” which is what the word scuttlebutt really means! (In the Little Mermaid cartoon series on Disney+, Scuttle also says his name was originally Scuttlebutt.)
Scuttle gets the scuttlebutt (or the news)…
From the women who wash all the clothes
To the hunter who arrows the bows
The chatter all over the palace
Is that your Prince Eric is gonna propose
That surprises Ariel! And, Scuttle and Sebastian rap. (P.S. I can sing Scuttlebutt. Can you?)
In The Little Mermaid stage musical, Scuttle has 2 songs. They are called Human Stuff (he talks about human stuff, but he gets the names wrong, like dinglehopper) and one called Positoovity.
